Yet Grossman suggests that the spirit of freedom can never be completely crushed. Ironically, just as Stalingrad is liberated from the Germans, many of the characters find themselves bound in new slavery to the Soviet government. His huge cast of characters includes an old Bolshevik now under arrest, a physicist pressured to make his scientific discoveries conform to ""socialist reality'' and a Jewish doctor en route to the gas chambers in occupied Russia. Grossman offers a bitter, compelling vision of a totalitarian regime where the spirit of freedom that arose among those under fire was feared by the state at least as much as were the Nazis. Completed in 1960 and then confiscated by the KGB, it remained unpublished at the author's death in 1964 it was smuggled into the West in 1980. Obviously modeled on War and Peace, this sweeping account of the siege of Stalingrad aims to give as panoramic a view of Soviet society during World War II as Tolstoy did of Russian life in the epoch of the Napoleonic Wars.

For me, I say, “something cold…something fresh.” He rings me up for a hibiscus tea lemonade. We comment on the spill of spring blossoms, the umbrellas bobbing in the sun. There’s something about ambient noise, the hanging up of household and family obligations that offer a well of inspiration. Being excised from our favorite cafes is detriment to our creativity. “Don’t you miss writing in coffee shops?” We lament, almost in unison. Here, I glimpse the exposed brick walls, the whir of machines, and a delightful array of starburst pendants. The coffee shop is closed to in-person dining, thanks to the pandemic, but they offer a walk-up window. She greets me with a warm smile and quick hug. She’s wearing a jacket, hands cupped around a warm coffee, even though its plenty warm outside, spring having recently-finally-arrived in the Chicago suburbs. I meet Mary Kubica outside at a darling coffee shop in downtown Plainfield, Illinois. I kept putting it down and picking it back up again to the point where I reached a reading slump. I wasn’t in a good mindset when I started this book and for the first seven chapters, I found it dull and confusing. From the seemingly trivial postponement of a visit to a nearby lighthouse, Woolf constructs a remarkable, moving examination of the complex tensions and allegiances of family life and the conflict between men and women. Ramsay, and their children and assorted guests are on holiday on the Isle of Skye. Maybe that’s what was so daunting about reading To The Lighthouse… If you read my review of Great Expectations, you will know that I am not a regular reader of classic literature. Woolf is known as a literary genius, as an author that has inspired people, an author that has written books with loads of meaning. There was something about reading this classic that was very daunting. To The Lighthouse was the second book that I read for my university course. So yes, Cher Ami is a pigeon - she's born in England, trained as a homing pigeon, and goes to war to help the Americans. This has ALL kinds of disaster potential. The pigeon parts are, yes indeed, narrated by the pigeon. The novel intertwines the stories of a hero messenger pigeon and a hero soldier during a little-remembered episode of World War 1. I'll admit it: I picked up her new novel a bit skeptically. With her new novel, Cher Ami and Major Whittlesey, she pulls off this trick again! I should know by now, fool me once, etc. I would not have thought it possible, but it worked! I loved that book - and am still a bit gobsmacked about the delta between my expectations going in and how much I liked it. In her last novel Lillian Boxfish Takes A Walk, Kathleen Rooney got me to care deeply about an old woman wandering around New York City on New Year's Eve. She’s a thirty-something divorcee still living in her hometown, and her last job imploded in a big way. The story follows Jasmine, a woman whose career (and possibly life) needs a boost. I’m torn between a 4 and 5-star rating and I don’t think I’ll be completely happy with either one – but if you’re a second chance romance fan, then it’s definitely a fun read. I loved the light, easy feel, and the story is head and shoulders above most of the holiday romances I’ve read this year. I’m glad that I did! It’s longer than a novella, shorter than a full-length novel, and just the right amount of holiday fun. A second chance romance that I actually liked? It must be the holiday cheer in the air! I’m always a little wary of second chance romances, but a book buddy recommended this Christmas read, and I decided to give it a shot. This book has been well received with it winning the Nestlé Smarties Book Prize Bronze Award and Printz Honor book in 2001.
